Happy Hanukkah, Happy Solstice, Merry Christmas

I love Christmas movies. “White Christmas,” “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Christmas in Connecticut,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” Frosty, Rudoph, etc., etc. I can be seen sitting on the sofa watching all iterations of “A Christmas Carol,” sobbing to “Wonderful Life,” and spewing cacao out of my nose at the antics of Bill Murray and Carol Kane in “Scrooged.” There is something about the content in all these movies that I find uplifting and satisfying.

But in all these movies, there is one quote that I think about year after year, day after day. It isn’t from the classic films, but, surprisingly, from “Scrooged.” In all the mayhem in this movie, in all the hilarity, Bill Murray, as Frank Cross, says one thing that stays with me. After he has seen his past, present, and future, and he has changed his mind about Christmas, he says this: “For a couple of hours out of the whole year, we are the people that we always hoped we would be.”

This year, we were divided as a nation, as a people, and as a country. Even family members squared off against each other — I know. It happened in my family too. With all the misunderstanding and animosity though, I believe that we all want to be good people. (Well, most of us. There are some people who just want to watch the world burn, but that’s another post) I think we all want to be the people we always hoped we would be.

So I have a challenge for you. Be the person you always hoped you would be. Not forever, though that would be nice. Just for a few hours. See how it feels. Maybe you like it so well that you want to do it for another hour or two. Or maybe a few more days. Or maybe a few more months. Or maybe, dare I say it, forever. Be patient. Be giving. Be loving. Be peaceful. Be thankful. Be that person. I know you can do it. I’ll do it too. And maybe we can start out this next year in the spirit of thankfulness and peace. This world can be a better place but it takes us all. Let’s start, shall we?

I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season. I believe in you. Be the person you were meant to be.

Love and light,

Naomi
